Therapeutic or hydrotherapy swimming can be useful for dogs of all ages and health. This is Titan doing another technique with Tanya. This is what “floating” look like. Notice the frequent stops every lap and the “wading” affect. This is purposeful to let the dog feel weightless buoyancy. It helps the dog get a massage from the heat and lapping of the water. It also provides a short rest period where the trained swim therapist does massage.
Hydrotherapy is a great rehabilitation technique for dogs who are suffering from immobility, muscle weakness and pain in bones, muscles and joints. Some reasons people try therapeutic swim therapy for their dog are:
- hip dysplasia
- spinal issues
- knee issues
- arthetritis
- cardiovascular endurance
- immune system function
Fitness health promotes lymph system function. It is a popular choice to help dog’s recover from post-operative procedures as well. Particularly to the back, hip and legs.
Here, we see how Titan does his laps and gets worked! Tanya, our therapeutic swim trainer uses her hand to encourage Titan to kick and strengthen his hind legs, while increasing coordination and improving his core strength. He gets spoiled with treats for his hard work. Titan leads his rehab by choosing when to launch from the deck.
