Many owners struggle to pick up their dog’s poop because it’s gross and it’s hard to find the right product.
Many products currently available consist of plastic bags, some scented like lavender. Although a very small portion of dog owners do like the scent and only use lavender scented bags, many more owners have indicated that the lavender scented bags makes everything smell even worse! I am one of the people who has used lavender scented bags once in the past. I was rushed, and doing sight-only shopping. I missed reading the “scented” part on the box and thought I was buying unscented, until I took them home and used them. Never again, not for me. What are your thoughts of the lavender scented dog poop bags?
There is a also a huge controversy over the plastic not being biodegradable and only inner roll cores and boxes are recyclable. This makes the youngest population of dog owners really upset that something that seems so basic, continues to damage the earth. Why isn’t there a better way?
There are compostable dog waste bags, that act and feel like “real” plastic bags. They are really convenient, melt away in a compost bin or decompose in 12 months if not used. They are derived usually from corn and other natural products to give them strength and texture.
Note that compostable is the real green alternative. Not to be confused with biodegradable. Biodegradable breaks down with no intervention after a very long time. Although, made by natural materials, biodegradable bags still takes years to decompose. Compostable is the preferred option as it is a much quicker process and even maximizes the dog poop in the bag for fertilizer.
The only problem is, this is a newer type of bag, and some cities will not accept all types of composable bags in their compost bins. So owners need to do their research first and find out if their city will accept the type of bag they want to use. Compostable bags require very high temperatures and low moisture, otherwise absolute perfect conditions to degrade quickly and effectively.
Dog Owner’s Respect for Their Community
The other problem with bags of any kind for dog waste pick up, is non-dog owners are upset at finding full bags of dog poop littering trials and parks and sidewalks because the dog owner did not follow through with making it to the garbage or compost bin. Sure, maybe it dropped and you didn’t notice, once is a mistake. But I have seen full dog poop bags tied to trees or left on railings, that seems very purposeful. Just a friendly reminder to make sure to follow through after your dog poop clean up, it is part of being a responsible dog owner.
