Miniature Poodles make great family dogs. Miniature Poodle is a smaller version of the Standard Poodle which originated in Germany in the 15th and 16th century. The dog was known in Germany as “Pudel”, German for, “splash in the water”. The dog was bred with a moisture-proof coat to improve the dogs water retrieving ability.
The Standard Poodle was bred to retrieve game from water and was noted to be the second most intelligent dog, only one behind the Border Collie. Common health issues for the Miniature Poodle include, Addison’s Disease (a hormone releasing gland just above the kidneys does not secrete sufficient amounts of hormone to regulate, stress, blood pressure, blood sugar and the dog’s metabolism). Addison’s Disease can be easily treated with daily medication when identified and diagnosed early. Gastric Torsion (twisted stomach), caused by bloating which may or may not be visible to the human eye. The dogs becomes very uncomfortable and restless and may have constant vomiting and diarrhea. This condition REQUIRES immediate medical intervention and surgery. The Poodle is at risk of Thyroid issues, where the thyroid secretes too much or too little thyroid hormone. This condition is also treatable with regular, daily medication when diagnosed and treated early. The Poodle may also develop breathing problems, epilepsy, hip dysphasia and cancer. Although most puppies are health, as the dog ages, the canine becomes more at risk of these health issues common to their breed.
