Weimaraner: The Grey Ghost

Weimaraner: The Grey Ghost

Why are Weimaraners Also Known As “Grey Ghosts”?

Most people can easily see that Weimaraners are various hues of taupe, grey, black or blue.  Some people also feel that their human like – light eye color gives them a spooky appearance.

But the real reason these elegant, athletic dogs are called “grey ghosts”, actually originates from their hunting background.  Initially bred to hunt larger game such as deer, bears and boars in Germany, agricultural changes thinned forests overtime and the breed adapted to hunt smaller game like rabbits, fowl and fox.

Can you “Spot The Weim?” In this modern picture we see how Cato, the Weimaraner’s coat camouflages well into natural surroundings! This camouflage gives Weimaraners a mysterious and illusive appearance in forests and other settings. These dogs were so committed to the thrill of the hunt they would run up, well ahead of the humans to point and spot prey.  In the misty seasons their grey or taupe colored coats would really camouflage with the natural color of the forests.  The Weimaraner was hard to spot in that environment and was so good at being still to “point” the prey; it gave a sense of mystery or was “eery” to some who witnessed it.

Can you image the sound of silence deep in a moist forest in the fall or winter trying to spot the Weim?
