Why are Weimaraner’s eyes blue?
Fact: Weimaraner puppies are born with bold blue eyes due to recessive genes! They are stunning! Their light eye color is rare among all canine breeds. However, the bold blue eyes in puppyhood do fade and change as the dog grows. They become light blue, green or even amber or hazel colored as an adult. You cannot control what color eyes your adult dog will have, but their beautiful, expressive eyes has long made this breed adored.
Weimaraners see just as well as other dog breeds, regardless of their rare eye color. (Which we know dog eye sight is not as sharp as ours.) You can find out more about how dogs see here. However, Weimaraners were bred for the ability to hunt, so beware, those beautiful blues will catch fast things darting around their environment!
As they age, their light eyes are just as susceptible as other breeds to cataracts, glaucoma and ocular nerve damage. Having a good veterinarian that you trust will help keep your dogs eye care and overall health maintained.
